Abstract
Datura Innoxia (Solanaceae) common named as thorn apple have been used in the several treatments. The present study, based on the phytochemical screening from chloroform and methanolic leaf extract of D. innoxia, to study its antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. The methanolic and chloroform plant extract was prepared using Soxhlet apparatus. The phytochemical screening of chloroform and methanolic extracts of D. innoxia was carried out by qualitative analysis shows presence of various phytoconstituents like alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, terpenoids, anthraquinones, phenols, saponins, tannins and carbohydrates. In the methanolic extract high level of phytoconstituents is present. Quantitative analysis showed highest in methanol concentrate in the Datura innoxia plant leaves. Alkaloids and phenol are present hence it has more used for therapeutic purpose. The antibacterial activities of extracts, D. innoxia medicinal plant as determined on five pathogenic bacteria S. aureus, E. coli, B. subtilis, Lactobacillus, S. typhi by using disc diffusion method. The methanolic extract showed higher antibacterial activity of 66 mm against S. aureus and least antibacterial activity of 49 mm against Lactobacillus. The strong antioxidant attributes with potential reducing power activity were revealed. The present study suggests that the leaf extract of this plant may be used for health supplement.
